“Captivating The King” Parades Lead Stars Jo Jung Suk and Shin Se Kyung

Following the teaser poster and announcement of the first broadcast, the new tvN historical series presents its lead pairing.

Captivating the King chronicles the cruel fate of King Lee In who is high-ranking but despondent, and Kang Hee-soo who dreamed of revenge but fell in love with him.

Director Jo Nam-kuk, who was recognized for his solid directing skills through dramas such as The Good Detective and The Untouchables, and writer Kim Seon-deok, who started the legend of a well-made historical drama for tvN with The Crowned Clown collaborated for the series.

Jo Jung Suk plays the role of Lee In, an infinitely strong but pathetic man and king. He was taken hostage by the Qing Dynasty, promising to live faithfully as a subject of his older brother Lee Seon, who cared for him, but soon his loyalty was seen as treason, and even his older brother came to hate him. The moment he was in pain, he met an ‘unknown baduk player’ and his heart was completely stolen.

Shin Se Kyung plays the role of Kang Hee-soo, a woman who penetrates the king’s heart and dreams of revenge. While Kang Hee-su was gaining fame as an ‘unknown baduk player’, he met Prince Jinhan’s and helplessly fell in love with him. However, she became entangled in the whirlpool of fate and was transformed into a spy.

Captivating The King

The Prince Destined To Be a King

In Captivating the King, Jo Jung Suk portrays Yi In, a Hanryang flower prince born with the destiny of a king. Lee In suffers when his loyalty to his beloved older brother Yi Sun is seen as a betrayal. Thereafter, he accidentally becomes close friends with the baduk player Kang Mong-woo (Shin Se Kyung).

In the released stills, Jo Jung Suk catches everyone’s attention as the king’s younger brother, Prince Jinhan. A fresh youthful beauty and determined sexiness can be felt from the slight smile on his lips and soft gaze.

In particular, the sight of him lying on a rock by a stream with the sun shining down on him looks like he has forgotten all the worries of the world and is in a state of absolute serenity.

In another still, Jo reveals the inner thoughts of Prince Jinhan, a man who is both infinitely strong and pathetic. Prince Jinhan’s deep gaze as he looks somewhere gives a premonition of his turbulent narrative that will unfold in the story.

Baduk Genius Hee-su

Transforming into a cross-dressing woman for Captivating the King, Shin Se Kyung as Kang Hee-su is a spy on a mission to overthrow the king.

In her character stills, the actress dons a hat and blue robe. The elegant facial features and noble appearance resemble the appearance of a scholar. In particular, Hee-su’s pensive appearance while staring at the board to make a divine move seems to reveal the fascinating appearance of Se-jak, who will later deceive the king.

After going out into the world disguised as a man, Hee-su’s subjective and intelligent beauty arouses interest as she gains a reputation as a genius betting baduk player who sets an undefeated record by competing against the best players. Later, she befriends Prince Jinhan because of Baduk.

tvN’s new Saturday-Sunday drama Captivating the King will premiere on January 21 and air episodes 1 and 2 consecutively.
