Surely Tomorrow Finale Week Recap
Acting on his greed, Ji-yeon’s husband releases an article implying Ji-woo had an affair with Gyeong-do while still married and deliberately got a divorce to live with her lover. The backlash is intense, and the public is boycotting the company. But Gyeong-do urges Ji-woo to stand tall and continue going to work.
People at the company avoid Ji-woo, and the board members demand she resign. Ji-yeon’s husband brazenly asserts that, as the owner’s family, they should take responsibility by resigning and hiring a management specialist to run the company. And sadly, it appears that he is on the verge of achieving his goal.
Before Ji-woo, Gyeong-do puts on a brave face, but he is on pins and needles. Ji-woo’s biggest fear is losing Gyeong-do. And unfortunately, it comes true. Prioritizing Ji-woo’s reputation, Gyeong-do releases a rebuttal article and ends their relationship. Ji-woo is a crying mess, and Gyeong-do can barely hold back his tears, but there is no changing his decision.
Only after Ji-woo walks away does Gyeong-do break down, sobbing. Ironically, although he got crushed every time she left, Gyeong-do is now the one putting an end to their relationship despite Ji-woo’s desperate pleas to stay together.
Following the article release, Ji-woo’s name is cleared, the company crisis is averted, and Ji-yeon is on top of everything again. Now, the only thing left is to prove Ji-yeon’s husband’s crimes and oust him. Launching a thorough investigation, Gyeong-do exposes Ji-yeon’s husband to the world as a sleazy man who drugged his wife and schemed to sell her family’s company. And the next time we see him, Ji-yeon’s husband is imprisoned, and she has probably gotten a divorce.
With everything now sorted out, the overwhelming loneliness and heartbreak sink deeper for our leads. Ji-woo makes excuses to see Gyeong-do, but he keeps away from her. Seeing his miserable state, his parents nudge Gyeong-do to take a break and go far away, which he agrees to do. Meeting Ji-woo one last time, Gyeong-do breaks the news to her. And she insists on seeing him off at the airport before he departs. She keeps her composure before Gyeong-do, yet bursts into tears on her way back. And it is the saddest of their breakups.
A year later, Ji-woo has become super successful at the company, and Ji-yeon is so proud of her. Keeping in touch with Gyeong-do’s parents gives Ji-woo solace, but she misses him deeply. Meanwhile, Gyeong-do is in Spain, in the same city he went to with Ji-woo. And as luck would have it, an oblivious Ji-woo goes on a business trip there, but they miss each other.
Only when one of their old friends passes away does Gyeong-do rush back to Korea. Our leads’ reunion happens under grim circumstances. And we have to say this is one of the worst writing decisions in the drama, even worse than the third breakup.
Ji-woo keeps showing up at Gyeong-do’s doorstep, but she can’t work up the courage to ring the bell or punch in the code. Then, hearing he is about to leave again, Ji-woo follows Gyeong-do to the airport. She doesn’t mind the adulteress stigma, but she can’t live without him. Finally, Gyeong-do gives in to his feelings and resolves to stay by her side forever.
Surely Tomorrow Quick Series Recap
Having met in their early twenties, our leads instantly fell in love with each other. But fate tore them apart. 8 years later, they reunite but get separated shortly after. Now, after an entire decade has passed, the paths get entangled again as our journalist male lead covers an article about the infidelity of our heroine’s husband. Will they make it through this time, or is their relationship already a lost cause?
Surely Tomorrow Series Highlights and Musings
Despite starting strong with multi-layered characters, an intriguing mystery regarding what happened in the past, and thoughtful dialogue, the drama dropped the ball in the second half, namely after our leads got back together.
Tossing away the meat of the story — how our leads will work around their differences and make it through this time — the drama shifted the focus onto annoying and dull story arcs no one wants to watch. And even after serving as a threat and causing our leads to break up again, Ji-yeon’s husband was easily defeated. Instead, we wish the drama had focused more on the romance and the friends group, who were genuinely interesting. Alas, what is done is done.
Besides the thoughtful dialogue, a big highlight was Park Seo-jun‘s acting. He nailed the emotional scenes, especially the third breakup, and made Gyeong-do feel charming despite being ordinary. Won Ji-an was good too, and it was brave of her to portray such a flawed character.
Surely Tomorrow might not be the best-written romance story out there, but it had its shiny moments. Granted, the last two weeks were exasperating, especially the finale, but the earlier parts were engrossing. It just had a case of misplaced focus. Rather than dwelling on wasted potential, let’s focus on the positives and keep going.
