Oasis Opening Week Story
Lee Doo-hak (Jang Dong Yoon) is used to yield to Choi Cheol-woong (Choo Young Woo), the son of his father’s master who is a famous Independent Movement fighter. Outshining him in school is also not a good idea. To make his situation disheartening, his father always reminds him to be mindful of what the Choi family is to his family.
When Doo-hak and Cheol-woong were both smitten by Oh Jung-shin (Seol In Ah), a transferee from Seoul, they eventually become friends. Jung-shin who receives the affection of the two young men decides they meet first as friends before she can decide who to date.
However, her heart finds itself beating for the kind-hearted and sincere Doo-hak. Sealing their young love with a kiss, they were not aware that Cheol-woong already discovered their reciprocated feelings.
Learning his son emerged at the top of the class, Doo-hak’s father decided for him to transfer to another school. Still, if his father learned that Cheol-woong got in trouble, Doo-hak can be blamed for not checking out on him.
One day, the three decide to watch a movie, but Cheol-woong witness Jung-shin’s happy smile conversing with Doo-hak. He decides to bail out the initial plan but finds the neighborhood bullies and gets a beating from them.
Jung-shin finds her way to where Cheol-woong is and tries to intervene but got hurt instead. Later, Doo-hak brings the bully to a place he asked Cheol-woong to go to a place to get his revenge. Unknown to them, the same bully was asked to cause trouble for Cheol-woong to ruin his father’s election campaign.
Out of rage, Cheol-woong hit the bully with a rock which caused his death. He pleads Doo-hak to take the fall, but he refuses. In the end, Doo-hak’s father relents to Madam Choi and Cheol-woong’s pleading.
“You’re a worse prison than this cell. Please let me go now.”
Years later, Doo-hak got out of prison and again helps Cheol-woong who is being chased for joining the students’ protest. Meanwhile, Jung-shin struggles to keep her father’s movie theater business afloat. Both Cheol-woong’s and Jung-shin’s father are deceased.
Her last conversation with Doo-hak had also made her listen to cold words from him. He blames her for what happened that night and asks her to just let him go. Doo-hak also estranged himself from his family.
He also joins a fraud team targeting real estate while he keeps eye on Cheol-woong to fulfill his promise of being indebted to him after he served the prison time meant for him. Secretly, he also watches over Jung-shin.
Oasis Opening Week Musings
KBS2 seems to be taking this drama flavor set in the 80s with harrowing moments interspersing with the glory of youth narrative. Reminiscent of Youth of May, the lead stars pitched such compelling portrayals right away.
You can see Doo-hak’s generosity, Cheol-woong’s selfishness, and Jung-shin’s optimism. Sketched vibrantly the lead stars assimilate to their characters with conviction. Inviting us to how they will navigate their lives that took different turns, we can’t help but root for them to happily smile genuinely.
With Writer Jung Hyung Soo and Director Han Hee on board the production, the vivid historical setting is in full swing.
Laying the groundwork, there’s an invisible line between Doo-hak and Cheol-woong that can’t be denied. Assuming the halted love triangle continues, it will build the conflict that has piled up owing to Doo-hak’s sacrificing nature and Cheol-woong’s inconsiderateness.
Hopefully, Doo-hak learns to love himself more and seizes the chance to affirm that indeed, he’s innocent as she knows him to be.
