Spring Fever Opening Week Story
“That is a strange feeling I have never felt before.”
It has been almost a year since our heroine, high school teacher Yoon Bom (Lee Joo-bin), got transferred from Seoul to the countryside as an exchange teacher. The reason behind her transfer involves a scandal in which a parent kept harassing Bom with texts. Although she ignored those texts, all the blame was placed on Bom for “seducing” her student’s father, and she got kicked out disgracefully. Making a 180-degree turn from her past sparkly self, Bom is now a recluse, dressed in black, and barely saying a word to her new colleagues.
It is just another “gloomy” day in Bom’s life, telling herself not to smile, have fun, or be happy, when she comes across our male lead, Sun Jae-gyu (Ahn Bo-hyun), a buffed man with a full sleeve dragon tattoo. Marching across the school playground amid a snowstorm, Jae-gyu is dressed in short sleeves and hardly affected by the freezing weather. His presence intimidates the entire staff except for Bom, who feels rather intrigued by his charisma and unexpected sense of logic.
As we come to learn, Jae-gyu is a parent figure/guardian for his nephew, Sun Han-gyul (Cho Jun-young), raising him with utmost love and care after Han-gyul’s parents died when he was young. Hearing that his nephew’s filial piety award got cancelled because his parents are dead, Jae-gyu went to the school to confront the teachers about it.
Despite his gangster-like appearance, Jae-gyu is a respectful man who refuses to have a female teacher serve him coffee and makes it himself. Getting curious, Bom blurts out questions about Jae-gyu, and the staff are amazed that she can talk too. From a gangster to a thug to a killer to a super-powerful man lifting a car with his bare hands, various rumors circulate about Jae-gyu. But none of them is true. Even the dragon tattoo is merely a sleeve Jae-gyu got as a gift. And when taken off, his arm is spotless.
“Were you trying to call the cops?”
Interestingly, that day at school wasn’t the first time our leads had met. We aren’t given all the details, but they met before when Bom was drunk, and Jae-gyu helped her out. However, he is the only one remembering it for now. Bom either forgot about that encounter or doesn’t recognize Jae-gyu. But he resolves to make her pay for the “mistake” of not recognizing him.
Now that midterms are over, it is time for the parent-teacher conference. As Han-gyul’s homeroom teacher, Bom is supposed to meet Jae-gyu and discuss Han-gyeol’s grades. But she is nervous about the idea of contacting him after almost calling the cops on him, wrongly assuming Jae-gyu was trying to stab her when he was just holding Han-gyul’s favorite chicken skewer. (Side note: After running into her at school, Jae-gyu wanted to approach Bom, but hilariously, he did so by chasing after her, getting her scared.)
The day of the meeting is here, and Bom is dressed up to prepare for the “battle” while Jae-gyu brings a heavy potted plant as a gift for her compensation for the one that got broken last time. He flirts with her, stating he is a half-Seoul guy and asking her personal questions. And feeling flustered, she tries to redirect the conversation to Han-gyul.
“Why are you peeking at me?”
Using the potted plant as an excuse, Jae-gyu gives Bom a ride home, where he tries to remind her of their first meeting. But she is none the wiser. Though she keeps her distance from him, Bom isn’t unaffected, stealing glances at Jae-gyu’s manly figure and getting touched when he gives her sweets to cheer her up. Also, she is stunned to hear he has a proper job — working at a power plant — and not a thug, after spotting him eating tofu in front of the police station.
Satisfyingly, the drama doesn’t take long to reveal the reason Jae-gyu got reported. A fire broke out, but the fire truck couldn’t pass through because a car was parked in the way. So, Jae-gyu had no choice but to lift the vehicle and twirl it a bit. Yet the owner got mad and reported him. (The rumor about Jae-gyu lifting a car bare-handed stemmed from this incident, but the poor guy had a hard time moving the car.)
Funnily enough, when Jae-gyu recounts the story to Bom, she misinterprets it as him touching a woman, not a car. Then, an allergy causes Jae-gyu to develop hives, and he gets flustered when Bom applies ointment on his face, so he lifts the bench she is sitting on as a distraction.
“Now I remember this man.”
Shifting the focus to our young couple, Han-gyeol has a crush on his classmate. Yet the girl, Choi Se-jin (Lee Jae-in), ran away from home, fed up with her parents, who kept pressuring her to meet their high expectations. Spotting her texting a strange man, Han-gyeol follows Se-jin to Seoul. And though she complains about Han-gyeol making her life hard by always coming in first while she is second to him, we can tell Se-jin has feelings for him other than jealousy or annoyance.
Hearing that Han-gyeol went to Seoul, Jae-gyu heads there too, and Bom insists on tagging along after hearing about Se-jin. When they arrive, Se-jin has already met the strange man and ridden the subway. And Bom barely gets on before the door closes. Sprinting at full speed, Jae-gyu basically flies around and meets Bom at the next station. As he catches her when she trips, Bom is reminded of their first meeting when she got drunk, and Jae-gyu caught her too.
Spring Fever Opening Week Musings
That was a good start. It is fast-paced, and most of the setup is already behind us. The leads are likable, especially Jae-gyu and his quirky brand of flirting, though his sturdy physical strength and swift speed are over the top and require some suspension of disbelief. On the other hand, Bom has more layers to peel back, and we are looking forward to learning more about her. Ahn Bo-hyun and Lee Joo-bin are doing great, and the young cast are pulling their weight, too. And with such an entertaining premiere, we are craving more fun to come.
