Lee Jin Wook is set to charm and challenge viewers in a role that’s more than just suits and courtrooms.
In the upcoming JTBC weekend drama Beyond the Bar, the actor takes on the complex character of Yoon Seok-hoon, a brilliant but emotionally reserved lawyer who becomes a guiding force for a young, idealistic colleague.
Premiering on August 2nd, Beyond the Bar follows Kang Hyo-min (Jung Chaeyeon), a rookie attorney brimming with confidence and righteousness but struggling with workplace dynamics. Partnered with Yoon Seok-hoon, she begins an eye-opening journey of personal and professional growth in the high-stakes world of legal advocacy.
Reflecting on his latest role, Lee Jin Wook shared what initially drew him to the story: “I was intrigued by how Yoon Seok-hoon constantly wrestles with whether he’s pursuing true justice or simply the justice of his clients,” he said. “The way he handles morally gray cases also added a layer of realism and tension that I found compelling.”
But Yoon Seok-hoon isn’t your typical cold legal genius. “He seems distant, but that’s only one side of him,” Lee explained. “His decisiveness masks a deeper sense of personal conviction and nuanced judgment. And the fact that he might like animals more than people? That twist gave the character surprising warmth and dimension.”
Lee described playing Seok-hoon as both cathartic and rewarding, adding that the character’s contradictions—cool exterior, strong inner compass, and unexpected emotional beats—make him all the more captivating.
Highlighting the essence of the role, Lee summed it up with two powerful words: trust and responsibility. “Those are the values Seok-hoon holds above all else,” he said. “If I had to assign him a phrase, it would be: ‘Trust me.’ That’s the energy he brings—dependable, grounded, and quietly formidable.”
Interestingly, Lee revealed that playing such a methodical, justice-driven character had a personal impact: “Spending time in Seok-hoon’s mindset made me more logical in how I weigh fairness and rightness.”
With Lee Jin Wook at the helm of this layered character, Esquire promises more than just legal drama—it’s a story of growth, principle, and the evolving meaning of justice. Catch the premiere of Beyond the Bar on August 2 at 10:40 PM, only on JTBC.
