Head Over Heels Episodes 5 and 6 Highlights
“Of all the things you said to me so far, how many of them weren’t a lie?”
Following after Gyeon-woo, Seong-ah tries to explain. Yet the betrayal hits too deep for him to listen to anything she says. All she can do is beg Gyeon-woo to let her stay by his side for 5 more days. She wants to protect him, but can’t bring herself to tell him he might die.
The next day at school, Ji-ho can sense something is off between Seong-ah and Gyeon-woo, but neither wants to talk about it. Later, Seong-ah shares with the two guys that she has been a shaman since she was eight. Yearning to lead a normal life, she kept it a secret, yet never meant any harm. Given how much Gyeon-woo despises shamans, she couldn’t tell him the truth lest he push her away.
Sadly, Seong-ah’s sincerity doesn’t reach Gyeon-woo this time, and he remains mad at her. In a touching move, Ji-ho pretends to have just found out Seong-ah’s secret. If Gyeon-woo realizes he was the only one unaware, he might cut off Ji-ho, and won’t have anyone to turn to.
Further complicating things, the baby ghost from last week gets agitated and stirs trouble around Gyeon-woo, shattering a glass cup, causing Gyeon-woo’s wound to bleed, and toppling bookshelves over. Even worse, Seong-ah’s power as a human amulet fades and eventually disappears. (It seems like it is only effective if Gyeon-woo likes the other person.)
Researching a way to calm the baby ghost, Seong-ah learns it is stuck to a doll owned by another classmate. To send the baby ghost away, she must collect the doll and give it to the mother, as she is the only one who can soothe the baby. At first, the classmate refuses to hand the doll over, but changes her mind after Seong-ah reveals herself as a shaman and explains the danger posed by the baby ghost. Stumbling across the baby’s mother, Seong-ah gives her the doll, and the baby ghost no longer cries or causes trouble.
Simultaneously, Ji-ho volunteers to become a human amulet and protect Gyeon-woo in Seong-ah’s stead. They might be rivals in love, but seeing how hard Gyeon-woo has it, Ji-ho empathizes with him.
“I am pretty good at controlling things that aren’t people too.”
Things happen, and Seong-ah spots Gyeon-woo and his grandmother’s photos with amulets drawn on them. It was Yeom-hwa’s doing. As expected, it was a curse, not a way to protect Gyeon-woo, as she claimed. (We have a feeling Gyeon-woo’s parents pay Yeom-hwa to get rid of Gyeon-woo, not save him. It won’t be surprising if Yeom-hwa is the one behind Gyeon-woo’s misfortune.)
To dismiss the curse, the photos should be burned. Yet those photos are the only memory left of Gyeon-woo’s grandmother. So, he pleads with Seong-ah to find another way. But to do this, they need Yeom-hwa to cleanse the photos and ward off the spell. While Seong-ah devises a countermeasure, Gyeon-woo heads to see Yeom-hwa, who almost curses him again if it weren’t for Ji-ho acting as a human amulet.
Combing through Gyeon-woo’s house, Yeom-hwa finds Ji-ho’s robot toy that protects Gyeon-woo when Ji-ho isn’t around. Yeom-hwa tries to snatch the robot, but Seong-ah stands up to her. Seeing through Yeom-hwa, Seong-ah figures she plans to burn them and break Gyeon-woo’s heart. Overhearing their conversation, Gyeon-woo burns the pictures himself. It is bitter, but that is the only way to cancel the curse.
The only perk of this mess is Gyeon-woo softening up to Seong-ah. He no longer hates her, having confirmed she isn’t acquainted with Yeom-hwa as he assumed after spotting them together. Better yet, Seong-ah can act as a human amulet again. Not that she knows it yet, telling Ji-ho to touch Gyeon-woo whenever an evil spirit lingers around. Despite catching on, Gyeon-woo lets Ji-ho be since he has faith in Seong-ah.
Meanwhile, Yeon-hwa schemes to reinforce the power of the evil spirit in the haunted house, offering her blood as a sacrifice. Anyone who enters that place will face great danger and won’t come out alive. Spirit Mother puts her life on the line and curses her, but that isn’t enough to stop Yeom-hwa.
As we end this week, one of the school bullies enters the haunted house. Seong-ah tries to rescue him, and a worried Gyeon-woo follows after her. In the ensuing chaos, Gyeon-woo gets possessed by the evil spirit, which is doubly sad, given the timing. It was the last day of the 21 days, and after that, Gyeon-woo would be free. But he has now to suffer a dreadful fate.
Head Over Heels Episodes 5 and 6 Musings
We knew it wouldn’t be that easy to save Gyeon-woo, but that was an insane twist. Now the object of Seong-ah’s affection and her adversary share the same body. And she has to both fight and protect him at the same time. Yeom-hwa is indeed vicious, and we are glad the show is painting her as entirely evil instead of trying to come up with excuses for her actions.
As we come to learn, Seong-ah’s parents didn’t abandon her because she saw spirits, but they exploited the poor girl for money and forced her to write deadly spells. Thankfully, Seong-ah met Spirit Mother and escaped those money-hungry people. The poor girl had her face exposed, got bullied, and had to drop out of middle school. High school was the first school Seong-ah attended as an ordinary student, and Ji-ho might be the only friend she made. Now that we know her backstory, Seong-ah’s wish to lead a normal life hits harder.
Last week, we thought we were getting a fierce love triangle, but it seems like Ji-ho will bow out gracefully and root for Seong-ah and Gyeon-woo’s happiness. He proved to be a kind-hearted person who wouldn’t turn away from anyone in need. And we are rooting for his happiness.
