Head Over Heels Episodes 9 and 10 Highlights

“If you want to harm Gyeon-woo, you must go through me first.”

Distracted by ghosts, Gyeon-woo can barely focus on archery. Yet Seong-ah’s reassuring smile helps him forget about everything and hit the target. But then Seong-ah senses Yeom-hwa’s prayers. Thus, realizing she is plotting another scheme to harm Gyeon-woo. Luckily, Seong-ah manages to reverse Yeom-hwa’s spell and saves the day, but they are both cursed and their ears bleed.

Coming in first, Gyeon-woo wins a gold medal. It is bittersweet since his grandmother isn’t there. Yet Gyeon-woo is no longer alone. He has Seong-ah, Ji-ho, Coach Yang, and his new teammates. Parting ways, Gyeon-woo heads to visit his grandmother, and Seong-ah returns to the shrine to confront Yeom-hwa, who scoffs at her for being her replacement, arguing Spirit Mother took her in after abandoning Yeom-hwa.

On top of being heartbroken because of Yeom-hwa’s words, Seong-ah has to face punishment for having her energy tainted. To avoid adding to her burdens, Gyeon-woo keeps seeing ghosts a secret from her. But this is eventually going to backfire.

In the morning, Spirit Mother catches Seong-ah and Gyeon-woo snuggling. But the guy is innocent. Seong-ah’s “dangerous” sleeping habits, slipping from her bed into Gyeon-woo’s arms, are to blame. It was funny how Bong-su knowingly held Seong-ah’s hand so Gyeon-woo would take the hits.

“I devoured him.”

As her punishment, Seong-ah catches a fever. Gyeon-woo offers to take her home. Yet she refuses, worried he will lose his touch after missing his archery training. After that, Seong-ah stays behind to help a depressed classmate who has a suicide ghost stuck to him. However, getting involved with ghosts is risky for Gyeon-woo, and it may cause him to lose control over his body and be neither dead nor alive.

Earlier, Yeom-hwa learned that her dead baby’s soul is getting punished on her behalf for her evil deeds. Yet, she has already gone too far to stop now. Her next move is to have Bong-su take over Gyeon-woo’s body entirely. So, she is all too pleased to give Bong-su advice on how to devour Gyeon-woo: have him shed blood while a ghost is around.

Deceived by Bong-su, Gyeon-woo joins Seong-ah as she faces the suicide ghost and hurts his hand in the process. Opening his eyes, it isn’t Gyeon-woo but Bong-su. Tricking Seong-ah, Bong-su pretends to be Gyeon-woo. Not that he can fool her for long. A perceptive Seong-ah catches on pretty quickly, but she doesn’t know how to bring Gyeon-woo back.

“You aren’t Gyeon-woo. You are Bong-su.”

For now, the only thing Seong-ah can do is try to console Bong-su. He kept saying he wants to live and be loved. So, perhaps if she treats him kindly, he will move on and leave Gyeon-woo’s body. But the more time Bong-su spends in a human body, the more his will to live grows. The students prefer this new “Gyeon-woo,” and he even saves the suicidal classmate from before from the bullies hounding him, thus sending the suicide ghost away.

As for Gyeon-woo, he has been wandering in Bong-su’s memories. Luckily, Seong-ah can summon him for about two hours, during which she tells him to befriend Bong-su’s soul so they can find a way to soothe him. Yet it turns futile after Yeom-hwa sows a seed of doubt inside Bong-su, claiming Seong-ah hates him and wants him gone so Gyeon-woo will return. Seong-ah might not reciprocate Bong-su’s romantic feelings, but she genuinely wishes to help him. But Yeom-hwa twisted the facts to manipulate Bong-su into turning on Seong-ah.

“I knew you would go all the way. So, I decided to wait for you at the end this time.”

The next time Seong-ah tries to summon Gyeon-woo, it isn’t him but Bong-su, who feels betrayed by her. He takes Seong-ah and Ji-ho to a memorial stone where the names of student soldiers who died in the war are engraved. Before he died, a friend entrusted Bong-su with a silver ring to bring back to his mother. But Bong-su died too and couldn’t keep his promise. The regret made Bong-su linger around and turn into an evil spirit.

Burying the ring, Bong-su resolves to put the past behind him and live as “Gyeon-woo.” But he intends to destroy Gyeon-woo’s original life and do as he pleases with this new body, giving up archery and tossing away Gyeon-woo’s treasured items. Before Seong-ah can stop Bong-su, a new predicament arises. Yeom-hwa tricked Ji-ho into handing over the silver ring to her. And she plans to smash it and summon the Grim Reaper to force Gyeon-woo’s soul to the other side.

Tying Bong-su up at the shrine, Spirit Mother tries to lure the Grim Reaper to the memorial stone site where Seong-ah is performing a rite. But, Bong-su breaks free and counter-curses Yeom-hwa, wishing she would die. At first, it seems he will get his way. Yet shockingly, the Grim Reaper doesn’t go after Yeom-hwa but Spirit Mother, who sacrifices herself to protect Yeom-hwa as her human amulet. Closing this week, Spirit Mother draws her last breath in Seong-ah’s arms, who wails, “Mum.”

Head Over Heels Episodes 9 and 10 Musings

While it is in character for Yeom-hwa to remain on the evil path even after learning the truth about her dead baby, the drama had her get her way multiple times this week, and Seong-ah grew weak and acted helpless most of the time. It was wrong of Spirit Mother to let Yeom-hwa be after figuring out what she was up to. Yet the most frustrating part was Spirit Mother sacrificing her life to protect Yeom-hwa. We can see Spirit Mother’s maternal instinct to protect Yeom-hwa. But what about Seong-ah? How is she supposed to carry on now?

Yeom-hwa brought this disaster upon herself, and we dare say it would have been satisfactory to watch her die after being cursed by the evil spirit she put her life on the line to bring into the world. However, she will live on as shameless and unrepentant as ever, while Seong-ah will be on her own with no one to rely on. Now, she has to save not only Gyeon-woo but herself.

Originally, Bong-su’s backstory made us empathize with him, having had to die at a young age, on the battlefield at that. But stealing another person’s life isn’t the right thing to do. And wishing to live and grow into an adult is no excuse for his actions. Hopefully, he will come around before it is too late and cross over. And then, there is Ji-ho, who will feel guilty and blame himself despite being deceived by Yeom-hwa. He might have been wrong to trust Yeom-hwa, but he was desperate to save Gyeon-woo, and Yeom-hwa took advantage of his despair.

As things stand, we see no way for Yeom-hwa to redeem herself, and she doesn’t even deserve to be redeemed after everything she did to make our leads suffer. Please give our leads their happy ending and include Ji-ho in that ending too. This trio is adorable, and we hope their bond remains intact.
