Things are getting intense in the romance department. While our actress chooses to be honest about her growing feelings, our director shifts to denial mode. However, as those around them gradually become aware of their feelings, our leads will be forced to address those feelings.
Will our leads get to make their movie? Or will their budding romance or issues from their past get in the way?
Our Movie Episodes 5 and 6 Highlights
“The outside world turned out to be tougher than I thought. But I don’t want to give up.”
Unfortunately, following her night outside in the rain, Da-eum collapses and is transferred to the hospital, where her father (Kwon Hae-hyo) gets her admitted and bans her from leaving anymore. He then meets Je-ha and calls him out on causing Da-eum’s condition to worsen by casting her in the movie.
Regaining consciousness, Da-eum tries to run away. As luck would have it, Seo-young is there too, doing some snooping around to discover Da-eum’s condition. She helps Da-eum leave the hospital and lets her stay in her house, as Da-eum has nowhere to go. Calling Je-ha, he is surprised to hear Da-eum is at Seo-young’s place. Heading there, he gets into an argument with Seo-young and drives Da-eum to his childhood home, allowing her to stay for the night and instructing her not to touch anything.
“Is it weird if someone like me likes someone like you?”
Traumatized by rumors that his father was having an affair with a rookie actress (the lead actress from the original Love in White), Je-ha vowed not to turn out like his father. So, when rumors spread about him dating Seo-young, Je-ha got reminded of his trauma and denied the rumors, lying that he led Seo-young on when he had no feelings for her.
At present, Seung-won mentions a dating scandal involving a movie director and the lead actress in his film, warning Je-ha not to make a mess like this. Je-ha assures him this will never happen. But we can see he is falling for Da-eum. Not that he will admit it, even to himself. Instead, it is Da-eum who confesses first.
Following Je-ha for a location scouting trip, Da-eum first shares that she participated in the auditions for Je-ha’s debut movie. She passed the first round yet couldn’t make it to the second round. Then, she deliberately became his consultant for this movie. Je-ha thinks it isn’t a big deal. So, Da-eum catches him off guard by saying she likes him.
Like the case with Seo-young, Je-ha turns Da-eum down. He cast her thinking it would help make the movie successful, so he doesn’t want these feelings to get in the way. (That was pretty harsh.) Parting ways, Da-eum cries her eyes out, and Je-ha seems conflicted. In the morning, Da-eum stays apart from the crew, yet Je-ha looks for her and ensures she eats a hearty meal instead of just bread.
Je-ha’s acts of care don’t match his words. #1 He tells Da-eum not to contact him directly, but keeps asking about her. #2 He gets into an argument with Seung-won when he releases Da-eum’s picture to the public, worried that being in the spotlight will stress her. #3 He sets alarms for the times of her meals and medicine, schedules filming according to her treatments, and ensures she can quickly get medical help in case of a seizure. #4 He meets Da-eum’s father again and tries to change his mind, promising to prioritize Da-eum’s health over the movie.
When Da-eum’s first love joins the movie as a camera crew, Je-ha feels jealous of their close relationship and asks Da-eum to keep her distance from him, claiming he is worried Mr. First Love would catch on to her condition. It feels uncomfortable how Je-ha uses Da-eum’s illness as an excuse instead of being honest about his feelings. The pressure gets to the poor girl, who is tired of having to be cautious all the time around other people, making her wonder what things would be like if she weren’t ill.
Adding more obstacles to our leads’ already complicated situation, a crew member gossips about how Je-ha and Da-eum look like they have a thing going on. She isn’t the only one noticing it, though. Seung-won and Seo-young are sensing it too. As we end this week, Seung-won corners Je-ha about having feelings for Da-eum or vice versa. Simultaneously, Seo-young connects the dots and drops the considerate act, asking outright if Da-eum is dying soon.
Our Movie Episodes 5 and 6 Musings
That was a powerful way to conclude the first half of the story. While we doubt Je-ha will admit to his feelings, we hope he will come to terms with his past trauma and get together with Da-eum. He is already in love with her, but might need a nudge to confess his feelings. Hopefully, he won’t wait until Da-eum faces a health crisis to do this.
On the other hand, for someone who wears her heart on her sleeve, it might prove challenging for Da-eum to continue hiding her condition, especially given how persistent Seo-young is. She isn’t the type to let go of things before getting her way. Speaking of whom, we started this week empathizing with Seo-young because of the harsh way Je-ha ended their relationship. But now we can’t help but find her annoying. She is quickly turning into a 1D obsessive second female lead after starting as a grey character.
The drama might not be to everyone’s liking, yet it has its unique charm through its slow narrative and relatable and flawed characters. It hits us in the feels and gives us food for thought, all while we root for Je-ha and Da-eum’s happiness despite knowing how their journey will end.
