Undercover High School Opening Week Story
Jung Hae-seong (Seo Kang Joon), a sharp and resourceful NIS agent, receives a top-secret assignment to track Emperor Gojong’s lost gold. To infiltrate Byeongmun High School, suspected to be hiding the treasure, Hae-seong assumes the guise of a high school student. Despite a troubled past at school, he bravely embarks on the “Undercover High School” mission.
As he gathers intel, Hae-seong discovers unusual electrical activity in an old building dating back to the Japanese occupation. During a nighttime investigation, he is apprehended by his homeroom teacher, Oh Su-a (Jin Ki Joo), who had previously witnessed his heroic intervention against bullies at her mother’s diner.
Meanwhile, Seo Myeong-ju (Kim Shin Rok), Chairman of the Byeongmun Foundation and the high school, reacts with stoic composure upon hearing news of the break-in at the historic building. She knows the intruder didn’t reach the basement and looks forward to his return.
Hae-seong reports to his team and is warned to be careful because the school keeps tabs on the intruder.
Hae-seong’s kind and clever seat mate shared new details about the basement of the old building. When he was again bullied, Hae-seong also stood up, landing him a trip to the counseling room. But the school bully being the son of an assemblyman was of course let go.
Meanwhile, Su-a tried to make sense of the chaos in the cafeteria but Hae-seong could only hint at how the school turns a blind eye to bullying because the perpetrator is an assemblyman’s son. As a temporary teacher, her influence is limited, especially since the Vice-Principal manipulates her desire for a permanent position.
In his final attempt to uncover the basement mystery, Hae-seong encountered Dong-min, who had seen something suspicious during his part-time job. They ventured inside and discovered a man hammering the floorboards. Despite chasing him, Hae-seong couldn’t catch him. Inside a room with a digital lock, he realized even the Chairwoman was unaware of the gold’s location.
Outside, Dong-min was shocked by what he witnessed. When Hae-seong returned, he understood why Dong-min couldn’t speak— the woman from the school’s eerie ghost story was indeed buried there.
Undercover High School Opening Week Musings
The adventure tone of Undercover High School made this series such a charmer right away. Not to mention that Seo Kang Joon is distractingly a handsome high schooler to begin with. Kim Shin Rok as a villain also promises a solid showdown.
We can’t have a strong feeling that she was even the one who tipped off the NIS, subtly steering them toward the treasure hunt. We’ve already glimpsed her vision once she got her hands on Emperor Gojong’s gold.
It also seems like Hae-seong’s stay at school will be longer than planned, and his growing connection with Dong-min might further fuel tensions with the school bully.
With a gripping hook, the series veers away from typical school dramas while still incorporating familiar elements like bullying and school politics in a fresh way.
What awaits Hae-seong in his mission remains to be seen, but if you’re looking for an exciting spy-themed adventure, Undercover High School is a solid weekend pick!
