“Past Lives” Starring Teo Yoo Vies For An Oscar Success

The film PAST LIVES is achieving tremendous success around the world, winning 72 awards and being nominated in 212 categories.

Past Lives is a work that depicts the fateful story of two days between Na-young and Hae-seong, first loves from their childhood in Seoul, who meet again in New York after 24 years and look back on their seemingly unbreakable relationship.

After being released as a world premiere at the 39th Sundance Film Festival, it received unanimous praise from foreign media and critics, quickly emerging as a blockbuster film, and continuing to win awards at major film critics’ associations in the U.S., garnering the world’s spotlight.

First, Past Lives announced the start of a splendid award race by winning Best Picture and Best New Picture at the Gotham Awards and New York Film Critics Association Awards, respectively, which marked the start of the Oscar season in earnest last November.

Subsequently, at the Independent Spirit Awards, known as the Academy Awards of the American independent film industry, it received a total of 5 nominations, including Best Picture, recording the most nominations, giving it the green light for an Oscar.

In addition, it ranked first in the Best Movies of the Year selected by Indiewire and Rolling Stone, and was also included in the Best Movies of 2023 list published by leading overseas media such as Vanity Fair, Time Magazine, and the New York Times. This raised the curiosity of domestic film fans to the peak.

Finally, on January 23rd (local time), Past Lives had the honor of being nominated in two categories, Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay, at the 96th Academy Awards, the most prestigious film awards ceremony. It is predicted to be a leading candidate for the 2024 Oscars, after setting a nomination record.

It marks only the third time in Academy history that a female director has been nominated for Best Picture for her debut film, and the first for an Asian female director. On January 18 (local time), actor Teo Yoo, who played the main character Hae-seong, also became the first Korean actor to be nominated for the Best Actor Award at the 77th British Academy Awards, and director Celine Song became the first Korean director to be nominated for the Best Actor Award at the 76th American Director.

With the film setting brilliant first records, including winning the Best New Artist Award at the Guild Awards, interest is growing as to whether Past Lives will win the Academy Award.

Past Lives, which was nominated for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay at the 96th Academy Awards, is scheduled to be released in Korea on Wednesday, March 6.
