JTBC’s new midweek drama, The Good Bad Mother, is a gathering of competent actors.
Launching today, the lead stars and director held an online drama presentation to share stories about the project.
Ra Mi Ran, Lee Do Hyun and Ahn Eun Jin are set to decorate the small screen with a therapeutic story brimming with laughter in The Good Bad Mother.
The series follows the story of a single mom who has been widowed at a young age, Young-soon runs a pig farm, and raises her son Kang-ho by herself. She becomes a “bad mother” – hard on her son because she doesn’t want him to grow up penniless or powerless.
Thanks to her discipline, Kang-ho grows up to be a prominent prosecutor, but loses his memory due to an unfortunate accident and becomes a 7-year-old again. Young-soon decides to become a “bad mother” again for Kang-ho in this comforting and touching comedy series that tracks the journey of recovery between mother and son.
In charge of the production is Director Shim Na-yeon of Beyond Evil and At Eighteen fame. Penning the script is Writer Bae Se Young who worked on films Life is Beautiful, Extreme Job, and Intimate Strangers to name a few.

A Touching Story of Finding Lost Happiness
Conveying the creative process for The Good Bad Mother, Director Shim Na-yeon explained the goals of the series.
“It will be a work that is not heavy and can be watched comfortably. When I saw the script by Bae Se-young, I felt that it was written sincerely and warmly.“
Regarding the title, Director Shim also explained, “Although ‘bad’ is used in the title, it does not mean that it is really bad. If you look at mothers, you can understand what the word bad mother means. It’s for their children, but it seems like the mother thinks a lot about whether what they’re doing is right or not.”
The Good Bad Mother Ra Mi Ran
Ra Mi Ran, who played the role of Jin Young-soon, a bad mother who lived a tenacious life to protect her child express a firm desire to work on the project.
“I felt like I had to hang on to it. I thought it would be an obvious story. But after I read the entire script, it was so charming.“
When asked about what makes motherhood in the series different from previous works, she profoundly expounds on the character she plays as a mother.
“Aren’t all mothers in the world different? I’ve lived as a person before becoming a mother. It seems a little funny to say that it’s something different and special. They are all bad, they are all different, and I think they love and live like that. Even I, a mother, don’t know how to become a wiser and better mother.“
Giving a peek at the emotional elements of the story, the actress shared the passionate scenes she shared with Lee Do Hyun has had her shed a lot of tears.
“There was always Kang-ho in passionate scenes. During the filming, at some point, I became a tear button. I didn’t want to cry, but I kept crying.“
Lee Do Hyun’s Acting Challenge as Choi Kang-ho
A total opposite to his previous role in The Glory, Lee Do Hyun transforms into a character of conflicting charms and complex emotions.
Lee describes his character Kang-ho has a colorful side who grew up under the supervision of a good mother. Confronting a difficult role, the actor received guidance from the director and Ra Mi Ran.
“It was very difficult to act as Kang-ho. My mother and the director guided me. I think I did a lot of work to adjust the level of my acting because I thought that if I looked too exaggerated as a child in the eyes of viewers, I would lose my sincerity. I think I laughed a lot and became brighter.”
Ahn Eun Jin Resonating Role as Mi-joo
Predicting fresh synergy with Kang-ho, Ahn Eun Jin portrays his friend and favorite person, Lee Mi Joon.
The actress confesses how she is somewhat similar to her character.
“Even if life is difficult, she gets up and remains optimistic.”
She also sympathized with Ra Mi-ran, whom she worked with, and praised her remarkable portrayal.
JTBC’s The Good Bad Mother will be broadcast for the first time on April 26 at 10:30 pm with a total of 14 episodes. International fans can watch it on Netflix.
