One Dollar Lawyer Episode 3 Highlights
In the opening week, we were introduced to Cheon Ji-hun (Namgoong Min), a lawyer who lives up to his name and only charges 1,000 won to his clients. While his intentions are truly admirable, it does not generate money which snowballs into trouble with his office space’s landlady.
Still, he is keen to be a modern hero for people who can be saved through his knowledge of the law. His introductory case has had him battle Baek Ma-ri at court, which the latter lost. Instead of joining her grandfather’s big law firm, she was given a mission by her grandfather. That is to work with Ji-hun.
Left with no choice, Ma-ri persuades Ji-hun so she can work at his shabby law office to defend the poor and the powerless.
“I will give your 1,000 won back.”
Picking up from Ji-hun’s new case commisioned by a young boy named Gun-woo who wants to protect his grandfather, episode 3 begins with chaos.
After meeting the uber arrogant tenant of an apartment complex where Gun-woo’s grandfather works as a security guard, Ji-hun is fully convinced to bring justice right away.
The arrogant tenant, Cheon Yeong-bae, works as an executive director of a big company. Seeing the small scratch on his car, he obliged with the simulation of what happened. Obedient to following the arrogant Young-bae’s instruction, the cart goes straight to the front of the car. Ji-hun declares a new case where he is the defendant and tells Ma-ri that she can only work at his law office if she will win the case.
Working on the case, Ma-ri was able to retrieve information about the bad Yeong-bae. Ji-hun facilitates her probationary training and she presents the options to win the case which won’t work. Inevitably, she decides to give up.
Ji-hun’s assistant Mu-jang tries to convince Ma-ri not to give up and explains how despite Ji-hun being odd, he always gives his full effort to his client.
“There are many ways to resolve a case. Some people will try to cover it up with a simple apology. Some people will try to deal with it using the law. But the people don’t come to us to learn about the law. They come because they need help.”
After meeting Min-hyuk, a friend who is also the son of her grandfather’s right hand, Ma-ri heads back to Ji-hun’s office to keep her promise to her grandfather.
Fate sides with Ma-ri as the new client is another proof of how vile Young-bae is. His driver needs help to still keep his job but serve a lesson to the rude company director.
However, since she is on the case because of Ji-hun, they won’t be able to take the case. Ji-hun tells her to solve his case quickly so they can work on the driver’s case soon.
Working on the case, Ma-ri tried to use the fact that she and Yeong-bae went to the same school. But ji-hun who was also at the same building meddles. Yeong-bae admits that he’s actually not sure about the scratch since there’s no proof, but the incident with Ji-hun is a sure thing, and there are even witnesses.
Instead of taking a peaceful settlement, Ma-ri burst out and lets off her steam by meeting grandpa and Bok-nam the boy who asked Ji-hun for help. She also meets with Ye-jin who advises her not to complicate things.
Receiving a message from Ji-hun, she went to where he is. Ma-ri talks about how he is famous for not losing a case yet. She then listens to his lecture about finding the best way to solve the case which will also make her feel at ease.
He tells her that people who come to his law office do not need lessons about the law but solutions to their predicaments.
“How about a game of bingo? If I lose, we will not press charges and leave. If I win, you must meet all their demands and have Yeong-bae leave the company.”
Brilliantly, Ma-ri thinks of a way by making a viral ploy of Cheon Young-bae being a nice person. With the positive attention he got, he can’t afford to act mean to people anymore like Gun-woo’s grandpa.
It turns out that the rich prisoner often visited by Ji-hun is the CEO of the company where Yeong-bae works.
With a promise from CEO Mo that he will turn a new leaf, Ji-hun easily wins his case that the CEO’s pool of attorneys can’t work out.
Entering his office CEO Mo sees a crowd and Ji-hun explains that the people are his clients who are filing cases because of his irresponsible and rude deputy director. He proposes a game of bingo which he frequently plays with CEO Mo when he visits him at the prison.
Bingo of Fate proceeds between Ji-hun and Yeong-bae. Thanks to their law knowledge, Ma-ri is able to give the corresponding numbers from the law articles given by Ji-hun as clues. Calling the winning number, Ji-hun’s clients rejoice as Yeong-bae faces his rightful doom.
One Dollar Lawyer Episode 3 Musings
How we wish crimes and disputes can be solved in Ji-hun’s way from One Dollar Lawyer. It sure makes a better place.
Kudos to the exciting and hilarious bingo game scene for this episode, it sure takes week-worth stress.
We can’t be sure if there’s a huge culminating case to be handled by Ji-hun’s law office. But viewers will be gifted with simple yet relevant cases that are relatable.
Therefore, more interesting cases are going to amuse and gift us with lessons in the coming chapters.
Often. legal dramas delve into debilitating and extremely evil cases that can be too emotionally taxing. So, this drama is really doing a great job deviating from it.
The approach to make the law easily understood in the featured stories is commendable. Additionally, it leaves valuable lessons as well like choosing not to complicate simple things, and of course, kindness. This we can expect to be a recurring virtue that will be underlined throughout the series.
