Surely Tomorrow Episodes 5 and 6 Highlights

“If you want to go, quit drinking before you do.”

Sending off the annoying ex-husband, Gyeong-do asserts he will stay with Ji-woo for a while to help her quit drinking. She isn’t pleased about this arrangement, though, wondering if he is confused about his feelings. But Gyeong-do argues he isn’t. He is only trying to take care of her.

For all the tough act, Gyeong-do is pretty nervous about living together with Ji-woo. Still, he sticks it out despite her protests and has Ji-woo spill the door code. From coaxing her to eat to taking a walk together when she is about to crave alcohol, Gyeong-do does his best to help keep Ji-woo off alcohol. But she dismisses her alcoholism, and it feels like there is a backstory here.

The next morning, Ji-woo packs up Gyeong-do’s things and takes them to his place. But he doesn’t give up, making a bet with her. If Gyeong-do rents out an amusement park for her, Ji-woo will go to work at her family’s company. Upholding his end of the deal, Ji-woo is eager to try out the rides, while Gyeong-do is funnily scared, even more so when they are stuck in the air for a few minutes. Spotting her smile, Gyeong-do falls for Ji-woo once again, wondering how long he will love her.

“Why does Seo Ji-woo have to ruin every important moment of your life?”

Meanwhile, Gyeong-do gives up overseas training, an opportunity others vie for, to the frustration of his superior, who scolds him for letting his love life hinder his career. Gyeong-do knows he will regret this decision, but for now, he wants to stay by Ji-woo’s side. Then, he gets a call from Ji-yeon asking to meet, but she is a no-show as her condition worsens and she forgets about their meeting. Picking her up, Gyeong-do shields her until she pulls herself together.

Interestingly, Ji-yeon was the one who split our leads up during their second time together. Was it because she told Ji-woo about her birth secret? Or is there another reason?

“You should have told me why you had to leave.”

Luckily, the drama doesn’t keep us hanging for long, and we dive into our leads’ second dating phase. They reunited at the wedding of two of their acting club friends. After relaying her congratulations, Ji-woo tried to leave, yet Gyeong-do stopped her, arguing she should have said goodbye to him before disappearing back during college. And she claims he grew sadder by the day over the disparity in their financial status, so leaving was the only option she could think of.

Getting wasted, Gyeong-do calls Ji-woo out, asking for an explanation. (She is involved in all of his drinking problems.) Ji-woo argues she did it because of him. She was worried his feelings would continue to be hurt if they stayed together. So, she decided to leave. Yet, it feels like she is pinning it all on him, without as much as apologizing for breaking his heart.

The day after the wedding, Ji-woo was supposed to go abroad, but she missed her flight and turned up at the lobby of Gyeong-do’s company with a suitcase. (The flashback we got last week and mistook for their reunion.) Next thing we know, they were already living together.

One particular scene is when Gyeong-do gets home and doesn’t find Ji-woo. His heart sinks, and he is relieved after hearing she is running an errand. The poor guy was worried she had disappeared on him without a word again. And it hits twice as hard because Ji-woo did just that during their second breakup.

“I got to enjoy a life of luxury thanks to a good stepdad and a good sister. But now I am Cinderella.”

It seemed like Gyeong-do was going to propose to Ji-woo, but then his father got into an accident and had surgery. Gyeong-do stayed with his mother at the hospital while Ji-woo was home alone. And then, Ji-yeon came to see her, revealing Ji-woo’s birth secret and urging her to end things with Gyeong-do. If their mother knew about it, she would mock Gyeong-do and treat him with contempt as she did with Ji-woo. Also, Gyeong-do’s father’s condition was serious, and he couldn’t afford to care for Ji-woo under these circumstances.

Heading to the hospital, Ji-woo watches Gyeong-do from afar and then packs up and leaves without a word. She is sobbing, and he is devastated when he gets home and realizes she is no longer there.

In the present, Gyeong-do finally learns the entire story from Ji-woo. As kind-hearted as always, he hugs her tightly, thanks her for surviving, and apologizes for not being there for her during that time. She is frustrated at him for always showing her kindness and it is the most vulnerable we have seen Ji-woo. Gyeong-do lets it all out, too. Back then, he thought Ji-woo had left because the house was too small. And he kept drinking while badmouthing her since he missed her. And Ji-woo apologizes for leaving Gyeong-do while he was going through a tough time because of his father’s condition.

“I bet you would give Jarim Apparel wings.”

Keeping up the spirit of honesty, Gyeong-do plans to tell Ji-woo about Ji-yeon’s condition. But she spots Ji-yeon’s text and asks why they are in contact. Just then, Ji-yeon drops by, and the sisters talk outside while poor Gyeong-do fantasizes about Ji-woo’s reaction after learning the truth.

Except Ji-yeon only mentions asking Gyeong-do to stop Ji-woo from leaving and convince her to work at the company, arguing she needed to get some rest, and turned to him for help. Ji-woo apologizes for making Ji-yeon carry all the burden, and they share a sweet moment. Yet Ji-woo remains unaware of her sister’s illness and will probably feel betrayed after learning the truth, especially since Ji-yeon and Gyeong-do had a chance to explain things but chose not to.

Concluding this week, the friends group throws a party to celebrate Ji-woo’s new job. And as things stand, it won’t be long before our leads enter their third dating era.

Surely Tomorrow Episodes 5 and 6 Musings

With all layers of their backstory now revealed, we look forward to following our leads as they work around their personality differences and make it through this time. However, we aren’t necessarily fond of how Gyeong-do always gets the short end of the stick in their relationship. And it doesn’t help that Ji-woo is always on the receiving end of his kindness without returning it. So we hope we get a better balance for their dynamics. Ji-woo has been stuck in her family trauma for long so it is time she pulled herself together and showed some growth.

Unfortunately, we aren’t done with the annoying ex-husband, and he wants Ji-woo back. Though we have to say this plotline is superfluous, as the drama has enough internal conflict. Hopefully, this arc will wrap up soon, as it is annoying enough to have one trashy husband around scheming against his wife.
