Uhm Jung Hwa Shines Again as a Forgotten Diva in Hilarious Comeback Drama

Uhm Jung Hwa is back—and not just on screen, but as a top star navigating the chaos of lost time and unexpected second chances.

In My Golden Star, the upcoming Genie TV original drama premiering on August 18, Uhm returns as Bong Cheong-ja, a former K-pop and drama queen who wakes up to find that 25 years of her life have vanished—and with them, her fame, glam, and place in the spotlight.

Directed by Choi Young-hoon (One the Woman, Good Casting) and penned by Park Ji-ha (The Woman Who Is Different Day and Night), this tear-jerking romantic comedy promises a rollercoaster ride of laughter, heartache, and midlife reinvention. Produced by KT Studio Genie and Jumbo Film, the series reunites Uhm Jung-hwa and Song Seung-heon a decade after their last collaboration, fueling excitement for their onscreen chemistry.

Uhm Jung-hwa plays Bong Cheong-ja, once the dazzling “Im Se-ra”—the nation’s sweetheart who ruled the Korean entertainment scene—now an ordinary middle-aged woman with rubber gloves instead of red carpets. The teaser poster released on July 16 captures this ironic contrast brilliantly. We see her gazing into the mirror, seemingly sweet and glamorous, only to recoil in shock at her own reflection. Gone is the starlet; in her place stands someone she can hardly recognize. The tagline says it all: “I opened my eyes and 25 years were gone?!!”

The accompanying teaser video takes things up a notch, showing Bong Cheong-ja in full denial. Declaring herself to be the real Im Se-ra, she frantically clings to her forgotten identity, questioning whether she’s the victim of a prank—or something stranger. Her tear-streaked, confused expressions, paired with hilarious timing, deliver a quirky yet touching glimpse of a woman grappling with lost time, shattered fame, and a very un-glamorous present.

Enter Song Seung-heon as Dokgo Chul, a traffic officer demoted from violent crimes and quietly nursing his own regrets. His chance encounter with Bong Cheong-ja sets off a chain of events neither of them expects. When she asks, “Do you know me?” his deadpan reply—“Do I have to?”—followed by a double-take at the name “Im Se-ra” hints at a dynamic that’s bound to spark both laughs and emotional depth.

RELATED STORY

As Bong Cheong-ja fights to reclaim her stardom—and her sense of self—viewers can expect everything from sharp satire to heartfelt moments, wrapped in a glitzy, golden package. With its retro charm, comic timing, and a dash of mystery, My Golden Star promises to be more than just a comeback story—it’s a celebration of reinvention, resilience, and the magic of second chances.

Set your clocks for August 18 at 10 PM. Uhm Jung Hwa is ready to shine again—and this time, her stardom comes with a whole lot more soul.
