Our Movie Episodes 9 and 10 Highlights
“I kept pretending not to notice the feelings I have for you.”
Going on a mini date, our leads hold each other’s hands and dream of being happy, only to be caught by some crew members (the ones from the secondary love lines) who are quick to glean they are an item. While the crew members are decent enough to let it go, the same can’t be said about the reporter from last week. When blackmailing doesn’t work on Seung-won, he heads to see CEO Ko, who isn’t interested in the photos either, and sends him away. Not that he gives up, twisting a story about Je-ja casting a rookie as the lead because of their relationship.
The rumors spread like wildfire, stirring up gossip on set. Worse, the investor threatens to back out if the scandal doesn’t get sorted out. Da-eum tries to act as usual, but she is affected by the gossip. Support comes to Da-eum from an unexpected place, Seo-young. Not only does she shut down a sly supporting actress who leaked a photo of Da-eum entering Je-ha’s room and gossiped about them being in an improper relationship, but she also tries to cheer Da-eum up. She might resent Da-eum, yet Seo-young wants to do that movie together.
Surprisingly, Seung-won and the investor knew from the beginning that Da-eum was terminally ill and planned to use her secret to make the film a hit. Je-ha uses that intel to sway Seung-won. Yet his priority isn’t the movie but Da-eum. He genuinely loves her, and these feelings made him change some parts from the script and rethink the ending, now that he knows what it is to be in love.
“I thought maybe I could live like the lead for once.”
Confessing to deliberately leaking her condition to Seung-won, Je-ha apologizes to Da-eum. They have already broken the confidentiality agreement, but they promise to stay by each other and go through it all together. Believing the crew members have a right to the truth since they are a crucial part of the movie, Da-eum wants to come clean about everything, both her relationship with Je-ha and her illness.
Rounding up the crew, Je-ha admits to being in a relationship with Da-eum. Yet, the favoritism part isn’t true. Da-eum earned that role by her talent alone. Then, Da-eum shocks everyone by disclosing her illness. The scene hits us in the feels, brimming with raw and authentic emotions and elevated by the winter setting and the snow falling in the background. But we can’t help but worry about the aftermath.
Originally, the investor told Seung-won to keep Da-eum and replace Je-ha. However, the situation gets more complicated when Da-eum’s condition is exposed online. Now, the investor refuses to negotiate and offers an ultimatum: replace Je-ha or forget about the investment.
The filming is halted for a few days because of the heavy snow. But it seems unlikely the crew will continue working after the snow melts, with most already backing out. In another considerate gesture, Seo-young refuses to quit and plans to see the movie through, having been touched by Da-eum’s sincerity and dedication. This side of Seo-young is more likable than her being obsessive. And we are glad she is on better terms with Da-eum, with both actresses resolving to bring their A game.
While all of this is unfolding, Da-eum’s condition declines, and her body won’t be able to take it for longer. She has been in severe pain, yet she pretends to be fine. Honoring her wishes, Je-ha doesn’t force her to quit, but looks for a way to continue filming. Sending off Da-eum, Je-ha offers Seung-won a tempting bait to get him to reconsider. Love in White wasn’t written by Je-ha’s father but his mother, and Je-ha is doing a remake to correct his father’s wrongdoing.
Shockingly, all the movies Je-ha’s father directed were written by his mother. But he emotionally manipulated her and stole her work, taking credit for the scripts she wrote and getting praised as a director and a writer. The leading actress from Love in White was friends with Je-ha’s mother and encouraged her to make movies in her name. But Je-ha’s father got her to yield the script for Love in White to him. The leading actress tried to stand up to him, but the affair scandal broke out just then.
Pleading with the leading actress, Je-ha’s mother asked her to star in Love in White and be her heroine one last time. She was diagnosed with cancer and had little time left to live. So, that was her last movie. When the right time comes, the leading actress should tell Je-ha the truth. And hearing Je-ha is doing a remake of Love in White, the leading actress thought the time had finally come.
“That is what it is like to lose something you love.”
After getting Seung-won to come around, Je-ha tries to take out a loan to secure money in case the investor pulls out. Then, he meets the crew members and tries to convince them to return. He now understands that making a movie involves every crew member who pours their precious time and effort into creating a movie.
As the week comes to an end, Da-eum gets into another seizure and is in much pain. She doesn’t want Je-ha to see that side of her, so Da-eum asks him to get out. Getting discharged, Da-eum bids her father goodbye and leaves with Je-ha. Escorting her to his childhood home, Da-eum is moved to tears after spotting the crew members there. They are back to make the movie together and root for her. As Da-eum bursts into tears, she asserts she wants to live so badly. And all Je-ha can do is hold her in a comforting hug.
Our Movie Episodes 9 and 10 Musings
We know where we are headed next week, but that doesn’t make it hurt any less. Yet instead of lamenting, we hope the drama gives Da-eum a gratifying send-off that lives up to her liveliness and dreams. Like everyone, she wants to live and make more movies. But sadly, her time is running out. So, we hope she can at least finish that movie and leave a legacy behind. Better yet, if she can watch the first screening and get the praise she deserves, though we have a feeling Da-eum might die before then.
Je-ha’s heart is going to shred into pieces after Da-eum passes away. Still, he chooses to stay by her side and not leave. It is doubly sad since he lost his mother to terminal illness. But this is a story about endings. And though their time together was short, it surely counts more than the five years Je-ha spent in a slump.
Last but not least, we appreciate all the love Da-eum received this week. From her manager crying and blaming himself for being clueless to her pain, to her best friend quitting her job to spend more time with her, to her father respecting her wishes and letting her do what she wants, to the crew members supporting her, to Je-ha gambling with his future to make her dream come true. It is bittersweet, but at least Da-eum got to live the way she wants. And perhaps that is what matters the most.
