Researching various methods to save her first love, our teenage shaman chases away evil spirits and charms her way into his good graces after their rocky start.
Sadly, this progress is only short-lived, and we end this week on a somber note, with our male lead uncovering our heroine’s dual identities.

Head Over Heels Episodes 3 and 4 Highlights
“He might not know if he wants to live yet.”
Gyeon-woo sits down in an empty funeral hall, sending deathly glares at Seong-ah (as Cheon-ji), who is the sole visitor. But it is not like she can leave him with the evil spirits eager to go after him. Not long after, the family members arrive, making a scene and lashing out at Gyeon-woo for calling in a shaman. But it is mainly because they will get no inheritance after Gyeon-woo’s grandmother spent her savings on him.
Luckily, Ji-ho arrives, having received Seong-ah’s message, and stands up for Gyeon-woo. Sadly, the poor guy has to leave without sending off his grandmother since his parents are coming and don’t want to meet him. It isn’t until Gyeon-woo returns to his now-empty home and spots his grandmother’s shoes that he stops holding his sorrow in and cries his heart out.
Worried, Seong-ah drops by to check on Gyeon-woo and get him to eat. Spotting a suicide ghost, she gets more nervous. But the thing is: no matter how desperate Seong-ah is to make Gyeon-woo live, it is all pointless unless he has a reason to continue living.
Touched by Seong-ah’s persistence, Spirit Mother shares a tip. How about Seong-ah becoming a human amulet and protecting Gyeon-woo herself? Yet to do this, she needs to stick by his side and share her warmth with him using physical touch. Funnily, Seong-ah’s attempts at “casually” touching Gyeon-woo come across as weird, and he almost deems her a pervert. Ji-ho suggests coming clean and offering her help to Gyeon-woo, but Seong-ah is worried being acquainted with a shaman might make things harder for Gyeon-woo.
“How does it feel when you shoot an arrow?”
Catching Seong-ah following him around, Gyeon-woo lets her tag along as he puts some photos next to his grandmother’s urn. Looking back, Gyeon-woo realizes his grandmother only smiled when he won a gold medal. This, along with a sincere nudge from Coach Yang (the archery team coach), Gyeon-woo starts practising archery again. The suicide ghost steps back, yet what sends it away for good is Gyeon-woo warming up to Seong-ah. There is only so much he can do to resist the sunshine she brings into his bleak world before giving in to her charm.
A smitten Seong-ah spends the night swooning over Gyeon-woo clutching her hand. He can’t focus on archery, either, as he thinks about her. Better yet, Gyeon-woo now doesn’t mind Seong-ah’s quirky antics, and no longer finds her weird or pushes her away. He is rather jealous that she finds another guy cute, unaware she meant the dog spirit stuck to the guy.
13 days have passed, so Seong-ah only needs to protect for 8 more days. But of course, this is when danger rears its ugly head. First, we have a baby ghost that is hard to reason with, yet Seong-ah puts it to sleep. Also, Shaman Yeom-hwa (Choo Ja-hyun) makes an appearance, and it seems she is acquainted with Gyeon-woo.
They go a long way back as Gyeon-woo’s grandmother sought Yeom-hwa’s help to ward off Gyeon-woo’s misfortune when he was a kid. Yet it feels like Yeom-hwa is more interested in torturing Gyeon-woo and rubbing salt in his wound (both literally and figuratively) than saving him. Which is expected from someone obsessed with amassing power and money, even if it means serving evil spirits, and who won’t even flinch at the sight of a young kid getting into an accident and dying.
“That is when I realized how powerful a person’s warmth is.”
A video about a haunted house goes viral. Unfortunately, Seong-ah (as Cheon-ji) and Spirit Mother are caught in it. Noticing the similarity, a nosy student pesters Seong-ah about it. As someone who loathes shamans (no thanks to Yeom-hwa), Gyeon-woo gets mad at the comparison and leaves with Seong-ah, scolding her for not standing up to herself and just smiling.
Sharing with Gyeon-woo that he taught Seong-ah to smile when intimidated, Ji-ho admits he has a crush on her and might play dirty if he likes her more. Interesting! The love triangle is about to start. Ji-ho has been jealous of Seong-ah and Gyeon-woo’s close relationship. And it seems he is done being the third wheel and will pursue Seong-ah.
Bumping into Seong-ah (as Cheon-ji) and Spirit Mother, Gyeon-woo tries to take Cheon-ji’s photo, arguing his friend was put in a tight spot because of her. A touched Seong-ah almost lets her guard down and takes off her mask. Yet, Spirit Mother urges him to talk to his friend instead of pestering them, and then she buys Seong-ah new clothes, nudging her to meet Gyeon-woo.
A sudden blackout has Seong-ah sharing a story from her childhood. She used to be afraid of darkness, but her mother would hold her hand all night until she could sleep. (The story is also an excuse to hold Gyeon-woo’s hand and send away the lurking evil spirits.) Touched, Gyeon-woo shares he used to smile when intimidated, like Seong-ah does, but it made bad people harass him more. He apologizes for projecting himself onto her, and she vows to ward off the misfortune tormenting him.

Through a flashback, we learn Yeom-hwa and Spirit Mother used to work together yet parted ways because of their contrasting ideologies. Spirit Mother wants to help people and chase away evil, yet Yeom-hwa is consumed with greed. Sensing Yeom-hwa might have to do with the vengeful spirit haunting the house from before, Spirit Mother looks into what she is up to. And she is spot-on.
Coming across Seong-ah (as Cheon-ji) in front of the haunted house, Yeom-hwa pretends to be a shaman helping with the ritual. But she is there to recite curses and stir up trouble. Snatching Seong-ah’s mask, Yeom-hwa challenges her to a ritual dance. They pull it off together. But before Seong-ah can get her mask back, Gyeon-woo spots her bare face and realizes she is Cheon-ji.
Head Over Heels Episodes 3 and 4 Musings
We have mixed feelings about the ending. On one hand, we are slightly relieved that the truth is out in the open this early. Now, Seong-ah won’t have to hide or feel bad and can protect Gyeon-woo more actively. But the feeling of betrayal will probably drive him to shut himself away once again, especially since Seong-ah is the only one Gyeon-woo trusted after the arson incident.
Also, the timing can’t be worse. Gyeon-woo is tearing down his walls and embracing Seong-ah into his life. He has taken up archery again and is finally happy. But it is all pointless now. Still, we have faith in Seong-ah. With her sincerity and persistence, she will surely win Gyeon-woo back. Let’s just hope she can do it quickly before evil spirits or Yeom-hwa harass Gyeon-woo again.
