Get ready to dive into a world of quirky superheroes and unexpected laughter! Netflix has confirmed the production of The WONDERfools, a new comedy-action series that promises to captivate audiences with its unique blend of humor, heart, and superpowers.
Leading the charge is an all-star cast lineup that includes Park Eun Bin, Cha Eun Woo, Kim Hae Sook, Choi Dae Hoon, Im Seong Jae, and Son Hyun Joo.
Set in 1999, a year marked by fears surrounding the Y2K doomsday, The WONDERfools promises a unique blend of superpower comedy, action, and adventure. The series follows a group of quirky townsfolk who unexpectedly gain superpowers and take it upon themselves to protect their city, Haeseong, from sinister forces that threaten its peace.
Park Eun Bin, known for her roles in Extraordinary Attorney Woo and Castaway Diva, takes on the part of Eun Chae-ni, a charming but chaotic figure who’s often considered Haeseong’s most notorious “trainwreck.” Chae-ni stumbles into an extraordinary turn of events that, in the context of this fateful year, bestows her with superhuman abilities. Set at the edge of the millennium, her story is filled with humor and heart, as she learns to navigate her new life and powers alongside a group of unlikely allies.
Cha Eun Woo, celebrated for his performances in True Beauty, Island, and Wonderful World, steps into a role unlike any he’s played before as Lee Woon-jung, a civic servant from Seoul. A rule-bound and socially awkward man, Woon-jung is initially a mysterious presence in Haeseong. He’s a man of strong principles and finds himself drawn into Chae-ni’s life as they join forces to solve the cases of missing persons plaguing the city.
The cast includes the acclaimed Kim Hae Sook, known for her work in Thirst, The Thieves, and Gyeongseong Creature, as Kim Jeon-bok, Chae-ni’s grandmother and only family. Jeon-bok is an enigmatic figure who runs a popular local restaurant with secrets that hint at a glamorous, dark past. Her character brings a deeper sense of history to the narrative, bridging family connections and legacy.
Choi Dae Hoon, of Beyond Evil and Captivating the King fame, portrays Son Kyung-hoon, the chief complainer at Haeseong’s City Hall. Alongside him, Im Seong-jae (Hellbound Season 2, Target) takes on the role of Kang Ro-bin, the city’s biggest pushover. Both characters gain their own set of powers after a bizarre encounter with Chae-ni. Despite their rather flawed super-abilities, Kyung-hoon and Ro-bin become her loyal allies in the fight against the city’s villains, adding plenty of comedy and endearing awkwardness to the unfolding adventure.
Son Hyun Joo (Hansan: Rising Dragon, The Good Detective) brings tension to the story as Ha Won-do, a character with dark motives and a seemingly rational, collected demeanor. Ha Won-do’s complex, villainous arc promises to deepen the narrative with suspense, as he reveals his hidden ambitions.
The series is directed by Yoo In-sik, celebrated for his work on Extraordinary Attorney Woo and Dr. Romantic, ensuring that The WONDERfools will feature his signature storytelling style, blending humor, heart, and action. The screenplay, written by Huh Dah-joong, the mind behind Extreme Job, is sure to bring an exciting and comedic edge to the story. Additionally, Kang Eun-kyung, known for her work on Gyeongseong Creature and Dr. Romantic, serves as the series creator, giving the project a strong narrative foundation rooted in distinctive humor and high-stakes drama.
Produced by NANGMANCREW and Kakao Entertainment, with co-production by FANTAGIO, The WONDERfools is set to bring a lively and nostalgic adventure to audiences. The show will be available on Netflix, promising a comedic, action-packed escape into a turn-of-the-century story of ordinary people turned unlikely heroes in the quirky town of Haeseong. Stay tuned for a release that’s sure to deliver humor, suspense, and an ensemble of unforgettable characters.
